Roth Conversion Strategies

A Roth conversion means paying tax now so future growth comes out tax-free. Done at the right time and in the right amount, it can lower your lifetime tax bill. Done at the wrong time, it simply costs you.

Overview

Convert on purpose, not by guesswork.

The value of a conversion depends on today's tax rate compared with your expected rate in the future, and on how a conversion affects everything else on your return, from Medicare premiums to capital gains rates.

We model several years at once to find the conversion amounts that fill lower brackets without spilling into higher ones.

Signs a conversion could make senseCHECKLIST
A gap between retirement and Social Security or RMDs
A lower-income year from a sabbatical, sale or business change
Large pre-tax IRA or 401(k) balances
Heirs in high tax brackets
Interest in backdoor or mega backdoor Roth strategies

Who we help

Built for the clients we know best.

We focus on a few client groups so we can go deep on the issues each one faces.

Where we help

Roth conversion planning for Portland-area and Orange County retirees.

State taxes change the math on a Roth conversion. Retirees in Portland, Tualatin and Sherwood pay Oregon tax on every converted dollar, and Orange County residents face California rates on top of federal.

A planned move changes the timing too. Clients relocating from Oregon or California to Boise, Idaho, or to a no-income-tax state, often benefit from converting before or after the move rather than during it.

Portland, Tualatin & SherwoodOR

Oregon taxes conversions as ordinary income, so bracket filling across several years is key.

Orange CountyCA

High California rates make the before-and-after-retirement conversion window especially valuable.

BoiseID

Idaho’s flat-rate tax can make it a better place to convert for clients relocating from higher-tax states.

Book a Free Call
Is a Roth conversion right for everyone?

No. It generally makes sense when your tax rate today is lower than you expect it to be later, or when tax-free growth and flexibility matter for you or your heirs. We run the numbers before recommending one.

What is the deadline for a Roth conversion?

A conversion counts for the calendar year in which it is completed, so the practical deadline is December 31.

How is a conversion taxed?

The pre-tax amount you convert is added to your taxable income for the year. That is why the amount and timing matter so much.

Can you help with a backdoor Roth?

Yes. We make sure the contribution and conversion are reported correctly, including the pro-rata rule if you have other pre-tax IRA balances.

Should I do a Roth conversion before I move from Oregon or California to Boise?

It depends on your income and the size of the conversion. Oregon and California both tax conversions as ordinary income, while Idaho has a flat-rate income tax, so many clients relocating to Boise save by timing conversions around the move. We model both options for clients in Portland, Tualatin, Sherwood and Orange County before you decide.
